Frequently Asked Questions
How do I buy something I've found on Gryphon's website?
Gryphon T-shirts, our instructors' books and CDs, and a few other specialty items are available for purchase online from the Mercantile page of this site. For everything else Gryphon offers, we ask that you call and place your order by phone. Feel free to use our toll-free number, 888-493-2131.
I've found an instrument I'm interested in on your site, but I can probably buy it cheaper from a discount online retailer. Why should I buy from you guys?
To be blunt, because of our service department. We do a better job of setting up each instrument before we sell it, and we're happy to make further adjustments for you both before and after the purchase. Local customers clearly have an easier time taking advantage of these services, but even long-distance customers frequently wind up saving money on set-up charges when they buy from us. Our luthiers check out every instrument that comes in. We do a better job of weeding out new instruments that have minor and sometimes major problems. Suppliers find us hard to please, but we're proud of being picky.
We also take care of our customers long after the sale as well. You'll get a 25% discount on the labor charges for any future set-up, repair, or modification work.
Also remember than none of our sales staff are paid commissions, so they have no incentive to try and get you to spend more money than you need to for the type of instrument you want, or the kind of music you're playing.
When are you open?
Monday through Thursday, 10:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Friday and Saturday, 10:30 to 5:30.
The repair staff is here Monday through Saturday 10:30 - 5:30.
Does Gryphon have a
catalog?
No, but we do e-mail out a semi-regular newsletter, the Gryphon
Gazette, which has some product reviews and music industry news, just fill out this form with your email address.
When you sign up you will also have the option to join the newletter of our Repair Shop: "The Fret Files" and our weekly workshop update.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. Gryphon ships instruments all over the world. To get an accurate shipping quote, we will need your full address including your postal code
Do you put instruments on layaway for
customers?
Yes. Give us a deposit and we'll put an instrument on layaway for
you for 30 days.
I noticed that you rent several different
kinds of instruments for students. Do you rent pro gear, short term,
for gigs?
Sorry, not at this time. We only rent student-grade instruments.
Do you sell instruments on consignment?
If so, what is the rate?
We sell lots of instruments on consignment. For Vintage and hard-to-find
instruments in higher price ranges, the rate is 20% (80% to the owner
after the sale is completed. Vintage is 1970 and earlier.) For newer instruments the rate is 25%.
Gryphon does not have a separate consignment shop.
We treat consigned instruments the same as our own inventory, changing
strings, offering customers after-the-sale service, etc. And every
consigned instrument is fully insured.
Do you custom order guitars for customers?
You bet, we do it all the time. We'll do our best to help
you get the guitar of your dreams from any guitarmaker we represent,
from big companies like Martin and Taylor to smaller workshops like
Collings and Santa Cruz, to individual luthiers.
I'm a performer, does Gryphon still give
house concerts?
Sorry, but no. Moving lots of guitars and store fixtures so we could
seat a small group for a concert became too time-consuming, and
a bit dangerous for the guitars.
