Huss and Dalton Guitars and Banjos
Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton have put together a remarkably diverse
line of models in barely ten years. This is partly because they
had lots of experience working for Stelling Banjo Works before forming
a partnership to build their own guitars.
We find Huss & Dalton models to be an appealing blend of traditional
shapes and styles combined with new ideas and variations. Yes, they
build a herringbone Dreadnought, and an OM model, but even their
most devotedly traditional models still have lots of individual
touches that mark the guitar as their own, and you don’t have
to search for a label to know who made the guitar. Other models,
like the CM, a small guitar with deep sides, is refreshingly different.
Other popular Huss & Dalton models are the 00, a slope-shouldered
Dreadnought, and the MJ, a 16 inch jumbo. Some features you often
pay extra for with other makers, such as wood binding and snowflake
fretboard inlays, are often included as stock on many Huss & Dalton guitars.
Considering they started out building banjos for Stelling, it seems
only natural that Jeff and Mark would offer banjos under their own
name. The Owens Mill is a full-on bluegrass banjo, while the Singletree
is an open-back model with 12 inch head and “scooped” fretboard. Gryphon carries both models.
Gryphon’s stock of Huss & Dalton guitars varies, and as
it often takes at least a couple of months to replace a model that
we’ve recently sold, we’re often out of our favorites.
