Judy Threet Guitars The connections between Gryphon and Judy Threet go back a long
time and actually predate her career as a guitarmaker, as she got
a Ph.D from Stanford many years ago and took lessons here at Gryphon
while a graduate student. Judy has lived in Calgary, Alberta since
the late 1980s, and while teaching there made a dramatic career
shift and began building guitars under the influence of Michael
Heiden. Unlike many builders, Judy does her own complex inlays,
when called for, and also does all her own finishing. This approach,
plus working entirely alone, means she only completes about a dozen
guitars each year.
Threet guitars are smaller than most, and her goal is an intimate,
balanced guitar. Even her largest model, the E size, still exhibits
these qualities. We get one Threet guitar every 18 months or so,
and we usually grant her essentially free reign regarding the woods
and headstock design. The custom headstock inlays she creates are
used only once.
The next Judy Threet guitar being made for Gryphon is scheduled
to be delivered in August or September.
