Cruz Guitar Company SCGC was one of the first independent guitar companies to challenge America’s big factories, and today their guitars are distributed all over the world. Yet founder Richard Hoover is on the job almost every day, and the company is still, in many ways, a large workshop rather than a small factory. Gryphon stocks a number of standard SCGC models, but what we’ve chosen to show here are some of the special order instruments that the Santa Cruz crew have made for us in the last few years. Unlike some guitarmakers, SCGC is willing to use wood that we supply, and in some cases we’ve dug into the stash of guitarwoods from Gryphon’s early days (Frank and Richard bought a lot more tonewood than they used in their guitarmaker phase of the early ‘70s, and it’s been aging gracefully in the attic ever since) With careful planning and wood choice, you really can get an exceptional guitar that’s one-of-a-kind, and yet has the proven tonal response and playability that comes with years of experience.
