Sergei de Jonge Koa/Englemann
Another great guitar from one of our favorite luthiers,
this one of highly figured koa with an Englemann top (with
some bearclaw figure, especially in the upper bouts). The
soundhole rosette is of spalted Manitoba Box Elder (a maple
variant) and the binding is figured koa, with a 3-ply band
of wood purfling between the binding and body surface. 15
1/2 inches wide at the lower bout, 4 3/8 inches deep, with
a string scale of 25.4 inches (Martin long scale). Sergei's
guitars are known for being impressive but a bit contained-sounding
when new, but they open up quickly, still retaining excellent
balance between bass and treble. Every one of Sergei's guitars
is slightly different, and despite the fact that this is the
30th de Jonge we've sold (since 1999), no two have been alike.
Working with a minimum of jigs and fixtures, he doesn't build
in batches but instead prefers to allow the woods chosen for
each guitar, and to some extent his mood, determine the outcome.
