| Martin made quite a few “custom brand” instruments
for the Wurlitzer music store chain beginning in 1922. Although
some had a special single-ring rosette, others were standard
Martin models but with the Wurlitzer stamp on the back of
the headstock, and this 000-18 falls into that category. It
was clearly intended for steel-strings, and the top bracing
is nearly identical to Martin 000 models from the late 1920s.
Here’s the condition report: Original finish on back,
sides, and neck. The top still has the original finish, but
it has been French polished (the guitar had a large aftermarket
pickguard that was crumbling, so we made a new pickguard and
touched up the scars outside that shape left by the old guard).
Neck reset and refret by Gryphon, along with a replica pyramid
bridge. Tuners are old, but seem plainer than the originals
should have been. No top cracks, two short tight cracks in
the back that have been repaired, same story for the lower
side. The finish is in good condition, but with lots of small
dings and light scratches, and a few deeper ones. A very powerful
sounding guitar, and steel-string Martins this early, especially
in the 000 size, are hard to find.
