1946 Martin D-28
Here’s a solid herringbone D-28 that seen its share
of miles, but has many more left in it, and “used but
not abused” is an accurate summary. Original finish
on body and headplate, original nut, original pickguard. No
sign of any finish touchup to the body. Wear to the top is
most pronounced between the bottom of the pickguard and the
bridge. Only one crack to the wonderfully straight-grained
Brazilian rosewood back and sides (a tight one, 2 inches long,
in the back near the backstrip), and only one short repaired
crack to the top, about 1/4” from the edge of the lower
bout on the bass side. The following work has been done to
the guitar: Neck was refinished years ago, and a lot of that
refin was subsequently worn off the back of the neck. Grover
Rotomatic tuners were added, probably in the 1950s because
these are the earliest version of the Rotomatics with the
nickel-plated cap at the end of the worm gear.
A neck reset, refret, and new bridge (in the original style)
were recently done by Frank Ford and his crew here at Gryphon.
The large fretboard dots, all one size, are original and this
style dot pattern was only used in ’46.
