1963 Martin 00-21
Here’s a 00-21 from Martin’s old North Street
factory era, made a year before they moved into the new factory.
Although it has some “modern” features, it was
made in much the same way Martin had been making 00-21 models
for the previous 100 years, such as using hot animal hide
glue and quarter-sawn Brazilian rosewood back and sides, with
very straight grain and wonderful color. Here’s the
story: The top and neck have been refinished, while the back
and sides appear to be original. Bridge, pickguard, and tuners
are original. There’s a plugged hole below the endpin,
in the end wedge, where a pickup jack was removed. There’s
also a small hole in the upper (bass) side near the neck heel,
from a strap button. Also the crack in the top, which has
been glued and cleated. New frets by Gryphon, and we also
refinished the headstock and gave it the correct size Martin
decal (the original decal disappeared when the neck was refinished).
There’s also a tiny filled area in the neck, just below
the seventh fret. Yep, it’s seen some changes, but it’s
an attractive Brazilian rosewood Martin from the early ‘60s
that plays well and sounds great.
