| This is a nice, early F-4 that’s been refinished.
Here’s the story: Original finish was not the more typically
seen reddish sunburst, but a blond finish on the top with
a reddish brown back and sides. That color scheme was retained
when it was refinished many years ago, but the brown on the
back is more of a golden color in the center than it probably
was originally. The neck was also refinished, and it appears
to have been slimmed down a bit because the black overlay
on the back of the headstock doesn’t come as far down
the back of the neck as usual (what appears to be a faint
crack at the base of the headstock, on the backside, is actually
where the overlay ends and the rest of the point is black
lacquer, not the black veneer). Thanks to the refinishing,
the ivoroid binding on the body has lots of cracking, but
none of it is loose and it seems stable. The original bridge
has been replaced with an adjustable ebony version, but the
tailpiece, pickguard (ok, “finger rest” for you
purists), hardshell case, and tuners with inlaid buttons are
all original. The binding on the bass side of the fretboard
has been replaced. There are two short cracks on the treble
side of the top as shown. This is a highly playable, good
sounding F-4 that’s been in the hands of a local musician
for many years, and its condition is much the same as it was
when we first saw it ages ago.
