It's a Mando! It's a Banjo! With a trap door back aroundo! Back in 1922 Gibson was making so many mandolins and banjos that their R & D department decided they would combine the two into a single instrument. Imagine the economies of scale when everyone who wanted a mandolin or a banjo bought one of these mandolin/banjos. Some people like to call these "Banjolins"
The tuners on the snakehead headstock are really incredible as well.
The trap door in the back was supposed to act like the lid of a grand piano & allow the player to let more sound out, perhaps not quite so euphonious as a piano .
