I would venture to say that one of the first things that pop into mind when viewing this page (after something to the effect of "what a gorgeous mandolin") is "WHY would someone trade this in?" The explanation is very understandable; the gentleman traded it in on a brand new varnish finish Collings F5!
I certainly enjoyed playing it and marvelling in its' crisp tonein prepartion for this descrption (with my rudimentray mandolin skills), but after hearing estemmed bluegrass musician (and long time Gryphon teacher) Jack Tuttle play this instrument, it became even more clear. This mandolin has the right bark, and is very lively and clear (Jack's adjectives). It most certainly does; this instrumewnt has all the proper ingredients for a bluegrass mandolin.
Plus, the satin-like varnish finish is beautiful. There is an inch long mark on the top near the binding (bass side, around the center of the "f" hole) and, next to it, a smaller but wider mark (visible in the photos). These are the only marks on this instrument.
We sold this instrument new last summer, and it's nice to have it around again. However, any used varnish Collings instrument that we have had on our stock list has typically gone to a new home FAST.
