1999 Martin D-28GE Brazilian/Adirondack #43
|
| Our Price: $7,475 | Serial # 693297 |
This D-28 Golden Era is from the first year that model was offered, in fact since it's #43 of 346 made in that first year, it's a fairly early example. It's seen quite a lot of use, and although it's structurally solid with no cracks the finish shows lots of light to moderate wear. This includes pick wear around the edge of the soundhole (between the lip of the soundhole and the inner edge of the pickguard) pick wear below the pickguard by the treble side bridge tip, and light nicks and dings to the back of the neck (perhaps from a ring on the left hand?). The headstock also shows lots of light scratches from string changes. It currently has a passive I Beam Baggs pickup installed, but there are circles on the bridge plate (just stains from the adhesive) that tell of another earlier pickup installation (thankfully they avoided mucking with putting a pickup under the original fossil ivory saddle). We refretted the neck, as the frets were quite worn, and since it came to us in a non-Martin case we gave it a new Geib-style Martin case that's identical to what came with it originally.
In short, this is probably not a D-28GE for the collector, but it has such a rich and powerful tone that anyone who likes playing Brazilian rosewood Dreadnoughts is sure to love it. Do these guitars get better after they're "played in?" Who knows, as we didn't play it 11 years ago and probably couldn't remember what it sounded like anyway. But it sounds great now, and thanks to a careful fret job it probably plays better than when new as well. If you wonder what all the fuss is about regarding Brazilian rosewood and Adirondack tops, here's the answer, and just think what Martin would charge for a guitar like this today!
