Soul Shangri-La, The Bang Girl Group Revue

Derek See has been on the Gryphon Sales staff for nearly eight years. He also plays guitar and is the musical director/ producer of The Bang Girl Group Revue. The group takes its cues from 1960's female vocal groups (think Martha & The Vandellas) and has been together since 2009. Thanks to their debut disc Soul Shangri-La, The Bang is beginning to attract international attention. The band features three lady vocalists both in harmony and choreographed dance moves (one of which is Derek's wife Angeline), and a Booker T & The MG's style lineup of organ, guitar, bass and drums backs them up. Using lots of vintage gear, Derek channels the sounds of Curtis Mayfield and Brian Jones circa 1966; a junction where soul, r&b and mid ‘60's rock’n roll collide! The lovely cover incorporates hand drawn original art by San Francisco artist Galine Tumasova. - $15

More Than One Way Home - Primary Colors

Rick Vandivier has been teaching guitar at Gryphon for many years, and along with vocalist partner Nate Pruitt makes up the group Primary Colors, whose new disc is titled More Than One Way Home. Rick and Nate are joined by Dan Robbins (bass), Jason Lewis (drums), and another Gryphonite, Ed Johnson, contributes some lovely harmony vocals. The disc has a very rootsy feel, and gives the impression of the musicians performing together in a room together. While it would be easy to label it jazz, the group adds blues standards (Willie Dixon's "Little Red Rooster"), great American songbook classics (Cole Porter's "All of You") and r&b ("High Heeled Sneakers", made famous by Tommy Tucker) to the mix for a very warm and friendly album. Throughout the recording, Rick Vandivier displays his guitar virtuosity and superb grasp of melody, which is sure to delight fans of jazz guitar. - $15

The Tuttles

Jack Tuttle has been teaching guitar, fiddle, mandolin and banjo at Gryphon since longer than any of us can remember. Here is an album with his three kids and A. J. Lee that will set your bluegrass world on fire. The album was made before Jack and Molly made an appearance on Prarie Home Companion in the fall of 2012. This will give you an idea of why they were invited! - $15
