Mandolin Outfit only $239 Here's Paul with one of his favorite mandolins for beginners, the Kentucky KM-140. Included in this popular package is a gig bag, Korg tuner, extra set of strings, and both an instruction book and a DVD by Bert Casey. This A style mandolin with F holes is perfect for budding bluegrass mandolin players, but can also be used for other styles of music. The KM-140 features a solid spruce top. You can upgrade to the KM-150, which is constructed with all solid woods throughout, for only $35 more.

Soprano Uke Outfit only $199 These "Flea" ukes are real musical instruments, made by the same folks in Connecticut who offer the larger Fluke brand ukuleles. Along with a uke like the one Alex is setting up here, you get a padded gig bag, Korg tuner, and a spare set of Hilo brand strings. You also get both an instructional DVD and a helpful "Tips and Tunes” book, both by Jim Beloff. These ukes come in several different colors, or you can create a uke outfit from any of the more traditional-looking ukes we offer by adding $50 to the tag price of any uke you choose.

Taylor Guitar Outfit only $659 Derek is shown with our deluxe acoustic guitar package, which includes a Taylor 114 Grand Auditorium model. Yes, the 114 may be less expensive than most Taylor models, but it has the slim neck plus incredibly accurate fretting and intonation that have made Taylor famous. As a result, we can set up these guitars so they have the easiest fingering imaginable for a steel-string guitar, a real bonus for beginners. The outfit includes a Taylor gig bag, comfy cloth strap, Korg tuner, instructional DVD, and an extra set of Gryphon strings.

Nylon String (Classical) Guitar Outfit, only $249. Tom is shown with a Strunal guitar (made in the Czech Republic), along with the gig bag, Korg digital tuner, and other goodies mentioned in the Walden guitar outfit above. We also offer accurately proportioned small size guitars by Strunal, including 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 sizes, that are ideal for children. These smaller versions have even lower prices, so you can get the same outfit with a 1/2 size guitar, for instance, for only $200. You can also add the same package of goodies to other nylon string guitars Gryphon offers.

Electric Guitar & Amp Package, only $279 This year our electric guitar crew chose the Luna "Gypsy," a solid-body electric with black hardware and a cool 'phases-of-the-moon' inlay pattern on the fretboard. The body is solid wood, not plywood, in either a transparent reddish brown or matt black finish, with a genuine rosewood fretboard. Also included is a Excel 10 watt amp, Korg tuner, 10 foot cable, strap, gig bag, extra set of strings, and an instructional DVD. Whew, that's a lot of gear, and best of all, we make sure it all works! Brian is shown setting up a Luna here.

5-string Banjo Outfit only $419 Entry level banjos are more expensive than guitars, because of all the metal parts. For reliability, we've chosen Deering "Goodtime" models like the one Tom is playing here, which are made in Lemon Grove, Calif. Over the last several years we've sold hundreds of Goodtime banjos, and they've recently been improved with a better shell and nicer neck. Along with the banjo you get a well-padded gig bag, digital tuner, strap, and one of David Holt's instructional DVDs. We also carry the Goodtime 2, which has a resonator on the back and produces a brighter tone with more volume and projection, so it's more suitable for bluegrass. The Goodtime 2 with resonator (imagine a big maple peanut bowl) adds $145 to the price. The bluegrass banjo package comes with a different DVD and also includes a set of picks.

Violin (Fiddle) Outfit just $499 Rob has chosen the Euro 065N, a nicely varnished example of Old World craftsmanship made in Romania. The rest of Gryphon's violin package is equally classy, and includes a case, P&H fiberglass bow, rosin, and the Jim Towles "Watch & Learn" DVD. Whether the intent is to play old-time fiddle tunes or classical music, this is a violin that will please even the most serious student. If the violinist or fiddler on your list has been struggling with a typical beginner's outfit, this Romanian example, with full ebony fittings, will be a welcome step up.

Steel String Acoustic Guitar Outfit, only $199 for the whole package! Ben is shown setting up a Walden D350 dreadnought, which comes with a Walden gig bag, Korg digital tuner, Levis strap, instructional "Watch & Learn" DVD, and an extra set of Gryphon strings. For an additional $25 you can switch to the Blueridge "Bristol" BM-16, which has similar features but in the smaller OM shape. Upgrades to slightly higher-priced acoustic guitars are always an option, just ask.

New Taylor Baritone Guitars |
One of the best kept secrets of acoustic music is the tone and depth of a low-tuned or baritone guitar. While it may seem as though this is a recent phenomenon, two of the most well-known acoustic tracks of the sixties used low-tuned guitars (The Beatles' "Yesterday" and "Sugar Mountain" by Neil Young were recorded on guitars tuned a whole step lower: low string to high string: D-G-C-F-A-D). Going back further, blues genius Leadbelly played a Stella twelve string tuned even lower yet (low to high: C-F-Bb-Eb-G-C). In more recent years, the late songwriter and sublime fingerpicker Elliott Smith experimented with many such low tunings, adding even greater depth to his powerful songs. |

Gryphon's 40th Anniversary Whopper |
We hope you were there, because if you missed it these photos will set you seething with envy. "I missed a party like THAT just to play golf?" Or, "Maybe having Aunt Martha drop me from her will for missing her birthday would have been worth it to see Kathy & Carol up close." The folks who did show up were treated to a steady stream of great live music, boosted just enough by an excellent sound system (thanks to Brian for running the board). |
