Ed Johnson’s Monday Night Guitar Classes
10-Week Session Beginning Monday October 9th
Class length is one hour and fifteen minutes. Cost for each class is $160. Take both classes and receive a $10 discount.
Introduction To Jazz Chords and Comping – If you’ve been yearning to play the classic songs of Ellington, Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, and the other greats, then this class is a great opportunity. We’ll take a finite number of moveable chord positions and put them together in common chord progressions that you are likely to encounter, all while learning a wonderful repertoire of songs. We’ll discuss chord theory as we go through each step of the process so that you gain a better understanding of the guitar and music in general. Students should have a firm grasp of first position chords. Some familiarity with playing up the neck will be helpful, although not a prerequisite. (Monday 6:20-7:25 p.m.)
Brazilian Band – Discover the joy of playing Brazilian music in an ensemble setting. Stringed instruments such as guitar, mandolin, bass, cavaquinho, even ukulele(!) as well as wind instruments, vocalists, light percussion, and accordion are all welcome. We’ll have a great time learning to blend with each other, playing complementary parts that create an infectious groove. We will cover traditional and modern samba, bossa nova, baião, forro, and choro. Songs will include sambas and bossas by Jobim, João Gilberto, Ivan Lins, and others; baiãos by Hermeto Pascoal and Luis Gonzaga; forros by Sivuca and others, and classic choros by Pixinguinha and Jacob do Bandolim. Level guideline: Guitarists should have some prior experience with playing moveable chord forms. Mandolin players should already be able to play some tunes and be familiar with basic chords. Uke players should be wellversed in basic chords. Bassists should have some prior experience in any style. For singers who would like to participate, all you need is an ability to sing on pitch and a willingness to learn songs in Portuguese! (Monday 7:45-9:00 p.m.) Questions? Carol Holsinger has been teaching harp on the peninsula for several years, and has often used Gryphon rental harps for her students. When Lynn Taffin “retired” from teaching harp at Gryphon to devote more time to her family, we asked Carol to join us. She has experience teaching people of all ages–kindergarten up to those ages we don’t mention–and has fun doing it. She especially encourages her students to enjoy their instruments, and has many tips to help insure that’s possible. Carol performs regularly with the Peninsula Pops Orchestra and at various private venues. You can reach her at 650-326-3146
