Gibson's reissues of Style 6 were also made in limited numbers, starting in 1995 and disappearing a dozen years later. And this example is even more rare as it has a 40-hole archtop tone ring. (We don't have any production totals for how many of the reissues were done in gold sparkle/Argentine gray sunburst like this one versus those with "checkerboard" binding.) While both the finish and the gold plating on this example are in excellent condition, this banjo did get played, as indicated by the wear to the first 5 frets (there are some shirt button squiggles to the lacquer on resonator). It's original throughout with the exception of the tuners, which have been changed to a new set of Gibson-branded engraved gears (the button on the 5th peg was changed to match the headstock set). FON stamped on the inside of the shell, btw, is 6-9801-1. They wanted a banjo that was as fantastic to play as the Goodtime, but that could compete in volume and projection in a jam setting. And if there is one thing Deering does well, it is to listen to the customer! So in 1999, the Goodtime Two banjo was born!\r
\r
The Goodtime Two is similar to the Goodtime Openback, featuring a natural blonde maple vibe with a satin finish to protect it. The design is deceptively simple but with a closer look you'll notice the artistry the builder gives to functional details.\r
\r
This model is called "The Chromatic." The pot is drilled in progressive depths in the same proportion to the fret spacing, hence the "chromatic" designation. Waldman drills 4 holes with depths based the chromatic scale of a 25 ½” string length neck. Each hole acts as an integral tone chamber adding tones to modify the main chamber of the pot. They add nice full overtones without ‘wolf notes\r
\r
The banjo is loud and bright and not at all "plunky" or dark sounding. It has good volume with strong projection. “This banjo has my new concept for a tone ring: Douglas fir,” Waldman says. “I’m using a “guitar top wood” where the rim contacts the banjo head. Just as this wood affects the voice of a guitar, it produces a clear, concise tone for the banjo.” The metal parts including the tuners are raw brass which will develop a nice patina over a few years. Stewart Universal Favorite #3 5-String Banjo - Used
Although not shown in S. S. Stewart's 1896 catalog, there is a description of this model below the illustration of the Universal Favorite No. 3, reading "The same number...made with fancy wood finish inside of rim, engraved border on outside of metal rim, thirty brackets, handsomely pearl inlaid..." and with a cost $10 more than No.3. With the exception of the calfskin head, this Stewart appears to be close to original throughout and the finish is in remarkably clean condition. There are four Grover Champion tuners in the case pocket, but the original celluloid tuners have been remounted. There's a hint of fret wear, suggesting this banjo may have only had steel strings on it for a short while (and it appears the fifth peg was never changed). One of this instrument's most outstanding features is the marquetry on the inside of the rim, another example of S. S. Stewart's awareness of Aesthetic Movement design which was popular in Philadelphia at the time. The subtle engraving along the bottom of the rim, and the extra helping of inlay on the fretboard, also echo common Aesthetic Movement themes. \r
\r
Two of the 30 brackets have nuts that don't quite match the rest, and some of the hooks are a bit long. Crowe Blackjack 5-String Banjo - Used
This RB-75 J.D. Crowe Blackjack was crafted in 2010 by Gibson in Nashville. It’s part of a limited run and its genesis is a bit of a mystery. According to rumor, this banjo was going to be based on a 1940 gold-plated RB-75 that was special ordered by Mack Crow, an early three-finger-style banjo innovator from North Carolina. That banjo was the only gold-plated RB-75 that Gibson ever made. Also, much of the metal work was engraved, suggesting Gibson used hardware that was destined for a higher priced model. Anyway, for reasons that remain obscure, that replica never went into production. Instead, Gibson offered the model you see here. J.D. Crowe does indeed play an RB-75, but it doesn’t look anything like this. (Did Gibson just assume one Crowe, or Crow, was as good as another?)\r
\r
The Blackjack has a number of unique features. Like the Mack Crow banjo, the metal parts are copper flashed, and then covered in thin satin gold plating. This gives the metal a darker sheen. The inlay on the headstock and fretboard is a pattern Gibson designed in the 1920s which was never used but has elements of the simpler Flying Eagle pattern. (J.D. Crowe’s 1938 RB-75 has Flying Eagle inlays.) The neck has a very distinct V-shape, which some players love, but a few find it hard to play. It also has a Sullivan 20-hole flathead tone ring. \r
\r
Overall, this banjo is in fine structural and very good cosmetic condition. We just refretted it and set it up with a new head. This banjo has been played a lot the gold plating is worn here and there, which lets the copper show through. There are a few minor dents in the finish on the resonator, most likely from shirt buttons. There are railroad spikes at the 7th, 8th and 9th frets. The original J.D. Crowe signature truss rod cover is long gone and has been replaced with a brass one. The original Presto tailpiece broke, a not uncommon occurrence, and it was replaced with a Gold Tone Straightline Tailpiece. This banjo also has two Keith pegs on the 3rd and 4th strings. Includes the original Gibson hardshell case, which, for some now obscure reason, has has the word Gibson blacked out.
The Pisgah Possum has walnut for the neck and shell and Persimmon for both the fingerboard and tone ring. Neat Neck 5-String Banjo - Used
The early 1930s Gibson Granada banjos with flathead tone ring have long enjoyed near-legendary status among bluegrass banjo pickers. With a few rare exceptions, virtually all were originally made as plectrums which were later converted to 5-string models by replacing the neck (the more popular tenor versions had a different tone ring). This example is unusual as it had a storied existence for decades as a plectrum, before it began its second life as a 5-string.\r
\r
Paul Martin was a banjoist and band leader in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1920s who attracted Gibson’s attention by playing on NBC radio. Gibson, then as now, was looking for high-profile artists to promote their brand, and in the wake of plummeting mandolin sales it looked like banjos might be their ticket out of a financial quagmire (in 1930 when Paul Martin and his wife traveled to Kalamazoo, Michigan to pick out a high-grade plectrum banjo, the guitar didn’t dominate American popular music as it would years later). While Gibson had introduced showboat banjo models, such as the Florentine, with carved resonators and celluloid fingerboards, the Granada was the top Gibson Mastertone aimed at real players, and with gold plated & engraved metal parts and a profusion of pearl inlays on the figured maple neck it delivered lots of flash from any stage. \r
\r
This PB-Granada began its second life when it was purchased from Martin’s widow in the mid-1980s and converted to a 5-string. Martin had altered the original neck with an additional string (not a drone string) and mounted small lights inside the shell to keep the skin head tight (the Paramount banjo company sold a kit for this purpose, as skin heads loosened, dulling the tone). One of Martin’s additions was fortuitous, the gold Grover Presto tailpiece is for five strings, a rare find today. \r
\r
These Doehler one piece die-cast resonator flanges are somewhat fragile, and the original for this banjo was broken. A replacement flange from a 1931 TB-2 was found and gold plated. With the exception of the flange and the tailpiece, all of the metal parts are original, including the armrest and tension hoop with Granada engraving (there are a few small screws that don't match, the tailpiece hanger bolt is nickel). The original rim is Gibson’s thick 3-ply maple “fat-boy”, topped with an equally desirable heavy weight 20-hole flathead tone ring. The 9582-5 FON is stamped on the interior wall of the rim, and Gibson painted a matching number on the interior of the resonator. The inner sidewall of the resonator shows the modification Martin made to accommodate his “head lights”, and there's also a 1 1/2" section of the binding on resonator wall which has been repaired, and a crack in the finish below it (see photos). We're assuming that the scratches to the Gibson decal and inner shell wall, and wear to the original coordinator rods, are also the result of the original owner's tinkering and mounting of the electric lights. (There's a period photo showing an electric cord dangling from the resonator flange.)\r
\r
The original plectrum neck went missing in the late 1980s (back then original necks were rarely saved), the shell and resonator, with the exception of the flange, are much as Paul left it. The 5-string neck, made by Frank Neat in the late '80s, is an accurate reproduction of Gibson’s 1930 Granada style, and has the original 4-to-1 Grover tuners with pearl buttons. The resonator was refinished in the original sunburst coloring. For decades this Gibson Granada saw lots of use, and although the owner had a light touch there is fret wear (see photos). This vintage Mastertone hasn't been cleaned and scrubbed and polished, it doesn't squeak when you move it on your lap. It plays like what it is, an instrument that's seen lots of use in two distinct phases that cover almost a century.
