This left-handed Soloist is an early example of the Schoenberg/Martin partnership, and it was special ordered in 1988 from Eric Schoenberg by the well-known artist and collector of left-handed guitars, Dugald Stermer. Stermer took delivery of this Brazilian rosewood Soloist in 1989, and kept it on the wall in his studio on the Embarcadero in San Francisco until his death ten years ago. Most of the finger wear to the top occurred during Stermer's ownership (he disliked pickguards), as this was one of his favorite guitars and he played it often.
It's in remarkably original condition, with the exception of the lacquer crazing to the face and some small spots of lacquer touchup. The tuners and pyramid bridge are original, there are no cracks in the top, back or sides. Schoenberg models like this one were some of the earliest reissues of the iconic 1929 Martin OM-28, and it has the wood binding and purfling of Martin Style 21 models from an even earlier era. (For those not familiar with Schoenberg guitars history, much of the work on these early examples was done by Martin, and it has a Martin serial number, but graduation of the top and the top's bracing, plus final shaping of the neck, was done by Dana Bourgeois, who was Schoenberg's partner at that time). Comes with the original case and the original sales receipt, which recently surfaced in Gryphon's attic.
