This Gibson F-5 FB was made in 2003 and is one of a limited run of special order mandolins. This is basically an upgraded F-5G with a carved Adirondack spruce top and a full body sunburst. (The standard F-5G had dark-stained maple back, sides, and neck that hid any figure in the maple.). This FB in the model designation stands for Flame Burst, and this example lives up to the name as the maple is highly figured.
But looks don’t matter if the sound doesn’t measure up and happily this one has a sweet, round tone with plenty of volume and a head-turning chop chord. If you want a flamey maple Gibson F-5 and don't mind the lack of binding on the back edge, and headstock, this F-5FB is a worthy contender. There's only minimal fret wear, and very light surface wear to the lacquer on the face. Includes the original case, which is in equally clean condition.
