While it's probably obvious given the year this Collings was made we still need to say it: this is essentially a new guitar. There are very light pick/finger scuffs to the pickguard, and even less noticeable little wisps to the finish on the face here and there (but you need bright reflected light to find them). No fret wear, no changes, etc. etc.
OK, now that's out of the way, what's a C100? This is a bigger version of the C10 that Bill Collings abandoned in the mid-1990s as he felt it was too similar to an OM. We were disappointed at the time, as we sold a lot of C100 models and liked its un-Martin look. Needless to say we were overjoyed when Collings brought the C100 back to the fold a couple years ago.
This example was a custom order, as the half-herringbone purfling around the edge of the top isn't a standard appointment, and neither is the light sunburst. And of course the Adirondack top is a rather pricey upgrade as well. Why the first owner didn't bond with this Collings is anybody's guess, but it has impressive volume and projection and plays great. And while we hate to argue with the late, great, Bill Collings, this body shape isn't very much like an OM at all in our opinion. For starters it's significantly larger: 15 3/4" wide across the lower bout (the OM is 15") and a full 4 5/8" deep, about a half inch deeper than an OM. The result is a nice closer-to-Dreadnought tone and volume but in a shape that's more comfortable as it sits lower in your lap thanks to the deeper curve at the waist. And needless to say, this one is quite a bargain compared to the almost seven grand you'd have to pay for a brand new version!
