Yep, this is a new Northfield, but somebody thought they were doing us a favor by fitting one of the "belly-basket" mandolin back protectors while trying it out. The top still looks perfect, as does the back, but the springy clips put some marks in the finish on the sides. Rather than spending the time and effort touching up the scuffs, we've lowered the price. (Touchup on a spirit varnish sunburst finish like this is tricky and time consuming.)
Despite the little marks on the sides, this is a great sounding F model, with a slightly wider neck and Northfield's innovative "5-bar" top bracing. Maybe it's the greater mass of the slightly wider neck, the bracing, or perhaps the Italian spruce top, but the tone of this mandolin is slightly different than the other Northfields we have in stock. How to describe it is the question. Fatter bass notes, maybe? A warmer, more bubbly timbre? We can say that it definitely has lots and lots of headroom, so you can get the volume you need without bashing on it and playing lightly is still tonally rewarding.
