We’re glad the days of looking down upon ladder-braced guitars are over, as this 1959 LG-1 is every bit as lively and full as any X-braced LG-2 that we’ve heard. Introduced in the 1940s as Gibson’s most affordable flat-top model, the LG-1 has since developed a loyal following due to its dry, woody voice, and punchy midrange. The ladder-braced design gives these guitars a direct, immediate response that records exceptionally well and has made them favorites among blues, folk, and country players.
Except for the tuners having been changed, this LG-1 is original throughout and has that to-die-for ’59 neck profile that acoustic and electric players love. The finish does show wear from playing and handling, but everything seems solid & crack-free, and all internal bracing is original. The recently installed L.R. Baggs HiFi pickup is perfect for plugging into just about any sound system. This one plays great and has a very comfortable string action (3/32” at 12th fret for low E, 2/32” for high E). It comes with a tweed hardshell case.
