With this 2019 reissue of a 1960’s Les Paul Special, Gibson successfully nailed the look and feel of this classic instrument. Known as one of the most desirable configurations of this model, the 1960’s Les Paul Special features a murder’s row of appointments that helped solidify the 60’s as a particularly great era for double cutaway Les Paul models. The dawn of the sixties brought with it the addition of the slim taper neck – a newer, slimmer profile that many players still find to be the most comfortable of all Gibson’s necks. Crucially, it was during this time that Gibson changed the placement of the P90 pickups. By moving the neck pickup slightly lower on the body, Gibson was able to both correct a previous flaw with the neck joint and also provide better balance across the tonal spectrum. At Gryphon we are big proponents of p90 pickups and this instrument certainly doesn’t disappoint. When played clean, the pickups deliver a bell like top end with a wistful dreamy quality. When driven, the pickups handle themselves spectacularly; while not quite as dark as a set of PAFs, they instead output a clear rounded crunch with impeccable clarity.
Overall, this guitar is in good cosmetic condition but there are a few visual imperfections to be aware of. A few dings and scratches located specifically near the volume and tone knobs as well as some instances of tiny scratches on the back. There are also a couple stray dings located sporadically along the side of the guitar. Otherwise, this instrument is in excellent playing condition; the frets are in perfect shape, the action is low, the intonation is true and comes with original hardcase included!
