Details
There's something about the tone of a lightly braced mahogany top that has its own appeal, and owners of prized all-mahogany vintage Martins don't sit around wishing their guitar had a spruce soundboard. Collings has captured both the tonal and visual appeal of those vintage examples with this 01, and if a warm and woody response is what you're after this example may change your mind about smaller guitars. Spruce top guitars can get a bit shrill in the smaller sizes, but this one keeps the tone dial on "smooth and balanced." Of course if you need lots of volume you need a bigger guitar, but for songwriting or backing a vocalist this kind of tone is ideal and the small size means it's almost as comfy to play as a ukulele when you're sitting on the couch. The simple band of rope purfling (another term for "half herringbone") looks great against the warm brown mahogany, and Collings legendary fit & finish make it a joy to ponder every up close when wearing your strongest glasses.
