Details
When Turner Guitars announced that they were making Compass Rose ukuleles again, we were very excited. We sold a lot of them back when Rick Turner was alive and looked forward to his visits when he would hand deliver them. Like all the instruments Rick Turner designed over the years, his ukuleles had some unique features. The most notable is the cantilevered fretboard, which extends over the body without touching it. This allows the top to vibrate more freely, which produces more volume and projection than we usually hear in a ukulele.
We ordered this Compass Rose Tenor ukulele with mahogany back and sides and a Sitka spruce top, with simple tortoiseshell-colored celluloid binding around the top. It has a mahogany neck and a rosewood fretboard and satin finish. It’s currently string with a low G string. This is sweet sounding ukulele with a nicely balanced bass to treble response. This is the first ukulele we have received from the new batch and we are pleased to see that it’s as meticulously crafted as anything we saw when Rick was overseeing the production. It’s gratifying to see his legacy is in good hands.
