Details
One of the nicest and most complete Gibson mandocellos we've had in a very long while, with original parts and finish throughout. The fact it has had the comfort and protection of its original hardshell case probably has a lot to do with the condition, but minor fret wear and some thinning of the finish on the barrel of the neck tells us this did get played, but very carefully. No cracks anywhere, and the original shellac varnish finish has a wonderful patina. About the only exception to near-perfect finish is a small ding to the top, shown in our photos, which is probably a "case bite" from one of the latches on the case lid.
Since it's tuned an octave below a mandola, and the body is quite deep, this has a wonderful full tone with plenty of "grit & growl" so even simple lines will add a lot bottom end to any mandolin ensemble. While quite playable in the lower positions the neck has ample relief, especially on the bass side, so those planning to play up the neck will need to consider some neck work.
