Details
The A-4 was Gibson's top A model mandolin in 1912, and was given the full compliment of deluxe appointments such as the bold fleur-de-lis inlay on the headstock. Gibson was still using the Handel tuners, with inlaid celluloid buttons, at this point but those wouldn't appear much longer. This example is remarkably original, including the faux tortoiseshell pickguard and ornate tailpiece. There are no cracks to the body or neck, and the original shellac-varnish finish on the body is in good condition although it shows typical crazing, or checking, to the surface. This A-4 delivers plenty of volume, with a strong ringing tone. The original hardshell case is also in good structural condition but the original handle is long gone and has been replaced with a nylon strap.
