Gryphon’s co-founder, the late Frank Ford, was an avid fan of Gibson mandolins. He got this Geib & Schaefer #440 Faultless mandolin case years ago in anticipation of the right uncased 1920s or early 1930s Gibson F-5 coming along. That mandolin never did show up, so we’re posting this case in hopes that it will make a worthy home for a fine mandolin.
This case is in remarkably good structural condition and is 100% original. All the hinges and latches are functional and in good shape, even the original leather handle has survived. The black Keratol covering has some scuffs, and is worn on the edges, but nothing seems to have come loose (see detail photos). There are a couple of worn spots to the green plush lining, the worst being where the treble side tuner buttons, and the screws holding those pearl buttons in place, wore the lining in the headstock pocket. One cute little plus is that the elastic that holds the accessory pocket lid closed is, well, still elastic after approximately 100 years and still does its job.
