Details
It's hard to figure how a guitar this small could sound so big. It's barely over 12 inches wide at the lower bout (about the same as a Martin size 2), and the string scale is under 24 inches, but in a blindfold test this Santa Cruz PJ can hold its own versus guitars far larger. The secret, as far as we can tell, is the combination of light top bracing and the 12-fret design which puts the bridge smack dab in the middle of the lower bout. Then there's the rosewood back and sides, or course, and the fact that while it hasn't seen much use (judging by only light fret wear), it's been strung up for twenty years. But whatever it is, it sure works and if you're looking for the ultimate steel-string you can play comfortably in just about any position this deserves serious consideration. Condition is nearly perfect and the lacquer has settled in the pores of the wood resulting in a nice patina.
