We're always delighted when one of Sergei's guitars show up, they're delightfully different and so carefully crafted. What makes this example even more interesting is the woods chosen, in this case beautiful two-tone bubinga and a figured redwood soundboard. Sergei's long tenure in the trade -he's been building guitars almost as long as Jean Larrivee- has given him connections to small-time rare wood dealers and other luthiers so you never know what he'll come up with next. We tend to call these fingerstyle guitars, but that's mostly because those players gravitate towards them. This one sounds great played with a flatpick, and the rich sustain and bass-to-treble balance serves almost any style equally well. Oh OK, you probably wouldn't use this de Jonge in a bluegrass band, or for bashing out Everly Bros. rhythm backup, but short of those extremes it can handle just about any guitar style as it's easy to play and offers lots of headroom.
Condition is excellent, there are no cracks or significant dents or damage and no sign of any repairs. There is light finger and/or pick wear to the top around the perimeter of the clear pickguard, and a few small finish marks behind the bridge. On a lacquer-finished spruce top these probably wouldn't even show, but this is very thin French polish over redwood so the surface is much softer.
