It would be hard to find more spectacular-looking Brazilian rosewood than the back of this Santa Cruz OM. This custom guitar was obviously ordered by a guitar player who was also a serious fan of exotic tone woods. The "bear claw" figure in the Italian spruce top may be what you first notice, but that's just the beginning for the book-matched Brazilian rosewood and highly figured koa binding, heelcap, and rosette make this a guitar with a subtle sparkle from every angle.
The sound and playability are more than equal to the visual treat, that is once you stop staring and begin to play it. Two things to note: There is no marquetry backstrip, the better to highlight the book-matched figure, but in the last ten years the lacquer finish has settled over that glue line. Rest assured it's not a crack! The hairline mark in the side that butts into the neck heel, however, is a check in the rosewood itself but it's fully reinforced by the neck block (see photo), so it's a visual issue only, there's no structural weakness. In summary, this was a custom-ordered Santa Cruz OM with top-of-the-line everything. It also sounds great, with a rich reverby bass response for such a relatively moderate size guitar. Includes the original hardshell case.
