Details
The Collings Traditional Case was designed by Bill Collings himself to echo the aesthetics of vintage cases, but to offer a better fit and more protection than those old-timers. This example was made in 2018 and it fits an OM or 14-fret 000. It's in excellent structural and cosmetic condition.
These cases were made with a 3-ply poplar veneer, which was laminated in-house at the Collings shop with alternating grain orientations for strength and shaped in custom presses for precise dimensions. Bill chose an outer covering of heavy-duty 22oz vinyl with no stitching around the lid, which eliminated the common failure point of frayed or broken thread. The interior padding included a neck rest and fingerboard cushion, placed to make the instrument perfectly level and stable, eliminating any stress points.
The case interior lining was made of rayon with a crushed velvet texture and, just like the wood, binding and purfling grain orientations of Collings instruments, the grain of the interior fabric was fastened to uniformly run in the same direction throughout the case. He even had the latches custom made. That attention to detail made the case very expensive, and Collings found they could sell enough to justify the time and cost it took to make them, so they discontinued them.
These cases were made to be a very snug fit for Collings models (that's part of what makes them so protective). While a Traditional OM case may fit an OM model by another maker, there's no guarantee the fit will be as precise as it will be with a Collings guitar. Unless you are buying this case for a Collings, please bring in your guitar to make sure it's a good fit. We strongly discourage buying this case long-distance for a guitar not made by Collings. While this case doesn't weigh much, because of its size the shipping cost is prohibitive when there's no guarantee it will fit your instrument.
