Details
Modeled after Billy Strings’ well-worn 1940 D-28, this modern iteration blends fan-favorite pre-war specs with player-centric updates tailored to Billy’s fast, dynamic style. At first glance, it looks like a classic herringbone D-28, but a closer look reveals some key differences. The most notable departure from tradition is the shorter 25” scale length, which makes string bending easier, especially with medium or lighter gauge strings. It also features a slightly wider 1 23/32” nut width, giving players more room without feeling bulky. These tweaks make it especially appealing for modern bluegrass flatpickers or anyone needing a D-28 that plays fast and responds with power and clarity. Tonally, it’s everything you’d expect and more from a D-28. The solid East Indian rosewood back and sides and spruce top produce a deep, resonant tone with rich lows and cutting mids. Aesthetically, it leans into the vintage vibe with bold herringbone purfling, antique white binding, antique toner top, and nickel enclosed gear tuners exclusive to Martin. An ebony fingerboard with abalone diamond and square inlays completes the classic pre-war look. Each guitar includes a custom paper label featuring Billy Strings’ pre-printed signature and graphic. It comes with a wooden Martin hardshell case.
