There's info at the bottom of this listing on the old maple used for the body of this Grand Auditorium, but guitars are a lot more than just a back with sides,so here's the rest of the specs and reasoning behind this unique model.
The top is Western Red Cedar, and I chose a set with tight grain and significant dark striping for this GA. I've always liked the combination of a red cedar soundboard on a maple body, as the cedar warms up the treble response and the guitar responds to the lightest touch. The top bracing is V-class, and the result is a very balanced response with great sustain.
The binding on body, neck and headstock is cocobolo, with a matching cocobolo soundhole rosette. The neck inlays, both fingerboard and headstock, are koa and boxwood as I wanted a minimum of synthetic materials on this particular model.
There's no pickguard on it now, but Taylor included a clear pickguard that can be installed at no charge. You usually see these cutaway Grand Auditoriums with a pickup installed, I chose to order this custom without one because there are so many pickup systems available now. Talk to Brian or Alfred in the Repair Dept. about your options, and remember that we offer a nice discount on both the pickup you choose and its installation. I hope you like this new-with-old-maple custom Taylor. Richard
This Custom Taylor is part of a small batch made with highly figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks. This was before a retail store was opened, and once that happened repairs and restoration quickly put most building projects on the back burner, where they stayed as demand for repairs changed Gryphon's direction. This maple has been stored in Gryphon's attic ever since, but Andy Powers and the crew at Taylor has helped us finally put it to good use.
