Details
Maybe there's a cleaner and more original Johnny Smith out there, but be prepared for a long search. This one is original throughout, including the finish and all parts, and comes with the original HS case and case cover. The paper label is missing, thankfully the serial number and model name on the back of the headstock are very clear. We're not sure what prompted Gibson to stamp this JS a second, but a good guess is the way the neck heel cap doesn't fit the upper shoulder of the body very well on the treble side (the heel cap sorta hangs over into the cutaway a tad, see photos). It's remarkably free of the little scratches you normally see on a used guitar approaching the half-century mark, such as on the glossy black headstock facing. It's obvious the original owner was extremely careful. A great example of the iconic single pickup Johnny Smith.
