Details
Gibson’s Murphy Lab has been releasing faithful, vintage-inspired guitars for several years now, delivering some of the closest-looking and sounding reissues to their actual vintage counterparts. This 2024 reissue of a 1964 SG Standard is a prime example of Tom Murphy’s vision for the Murphy Lab series. This guitar is finished in a light nitrocellulose lacquer that has been lightly aged to create authentic finish checking. The broken-in feel makes it feel very similar to an original ’60s SG. The pickups are Alnico III Custombuckers, which are unpotted and behave very similarly to early PAF pickups. They are clear and articulate with a bit of airiness, and they sound great with some overdrive. It also comes with a nicely aged factory Maestro Vibrola. Other than the factory finish checking, there are a few instances of playwear; most notably a scrape on the arm contour of the lower bout, just to the left of the Vibrola (visible in the photos). Aside from that, this guitar is in great shape with almost no fretwear. This is an excellent option for someone looking for vintage SG appeal in a modern guitar. It comes with its original hardshell case and paperwork.
