Details
The Guild Artist Award has a long history that dates back to 1956, when it was introduced as the Johnny Smith Award. (Smith was a friend of Guild founder Alfred Dronge). When Gibson lured Smith away in 1961, the Artist Award lived on as Guild's premium archtop model. This example was made in 1992 and it’s in fine cosmetic and structural condition. The top is made of sold, carved spruce and the back and sides are nicely figured solid maple. It has a substantial acoustic sound and when you do plug in the tone is luxurious. The neck has a slim, low profile. The frets have just a bit of wear. The previous owner swapped out the original floating Guild pickup for a Kent Armstrong Jazzy Joe Mini Humbucker, which looks and sounds like a Johnny Smith-style pickup. Includes a double-arch TKL hardshell case.
