Details
Collings Old-Growth Sitka is not wood that comes from recently felled trees. Instead it's spruce that was put to use years ago for structural purposes, such as bridge beams or buoyancy logs, which often show mineral coloration as seen here (above the end pin). Spruce has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any wood that's available in large dimensions, making it an obvious choice when strength is critical. When this salvaged wood is reclaimed for guitar soundboards it yields a strong clear tone, and while it responds to a light touch it also has incredible head room and can yield high volume without sounding forced. This is a valuable asset to flatpickers, who often have to switch from subtle playing when backing vocals to full power picking for leads and competing with inherently louder instruments such as banjos and fiddles.
