With a torrefied Sitka Spruce soundboard, 1 3 ⁄ 4 '' nut width and stage-ready ES-2 pickup, I designed this guitar to deliver a powerful, clear and even tone that compliments fingerstyle players and sensitive flat pickers alike. The Taylor Custom Shop certainly delivered, and the resulting guitar is both bright and airy, as to be expected from aged maple of this caliber, but it has an astonishing amount of low-end warmth that makes it an excellent soloist’s instrument.
Aesthetically, I wanted the gorgeous figuring on the maple to be the focal point of the instrument and chose a chocolaty dark edge-burst finish that pairs well with the natural beauty of the wood. The elegant koa binding is both stunning and functional, (I’ve always been a huge fan of hardwood binding), and serves as a pleasing transition from the maple back to the spruce top.
This Grand Auditorium achieves the distinct High-Fidelity tone that Taylor is known for, but it's coded with a little bit of Gryphon’s DNA. Easy to pick up, hard to put down, I know you’ll enjoy this special instrument!- Jason
This Custom Taylor is part of a small batch made with highly figured maple Gryphon's co-founders bought fifty years ago when they were making a lot of banjo necks. This was before a retail store was opened, and once that happened repairs and restoration quickly put most building projects on the back burner, where they stayed as demand for repairs changed Gryphon's direction. This maple has been stored in Gryphon's attic ever since, but Andy Powers and the crew at Taylor has helped us finally put it to good use.
