Details
There are probably more versions of the L-1 guitar than any other Gibson model code. Starting as an archtop circa 1902, the L-1 became one of Gibson's first flattop models in 1926, but still retained the original "egg-shaped" body outline. This version was made famous by photos of two very different but equally important artists: country blues artist Robert Johnson and country music's First Lady of the guitar, Maybelle Carter. Then in 1930 Gibson changed the body shape and made it larger, and the original L-1 models like this one were consigned to the history bin.
True to form, Gibson modified their original flat-top L-1 model at least four times in its short four year run, and this is the last version which was only offered for barely a year. Along with minor changes to the bridge, it has a different top bracing pattern than earlier 1929 versions. Although not a full X pattern, this example has what's known as "A pattern" bracing which looks like the lower half of the X pattern that followed in 1930. Although the bracing is still extremely light, these are known for being far more stable and better -sounding, than the earlier version, which had bracing that looks more like an "H".
This example shows playing wear, especially to the top, but has seen very few changes. The only crack was to the lower bout (treble side) and the neck, top and back are crack-free. All top bracing is original, including the bridge plate. Original finish throughout, plus original tuners, bridge, and even has the original bridge pins (neck reset and refret were done here). The string scale is barely over 24", and when combined with the comfy neck profile and low string action the result is a very easy guitar to play. The silver silk-screened "The Gibson" logo on the headstock is only faintly visible, but really, you hardly need a logo to recognize this iconic early Gibson flattop.
