While double-neck instruments fascinated many over a hundred years ago, they found their calling in popular music of the 1970s in the form of electric guitars. Martin made a one-off double neck (one neck a 6-string and the other a 12-string) for the NAMM Show over ten years ago and it mostly laid dormant until John Mayer inquired about it before his solo acoustic tour in 2023. By popular demand, in 2025, Martin released a production model double-neck that is truly a sight to behold.
The Grand J-28E DN is a gorgeous instrument done in the 28-style on a Grand Jumbo body. The top neck is an incredibly comfortable 12-string neck with a 1 13/16th nut width. The lower neck, a standard 6-string, has a fast and extremely playable 1 11/16th nut width. The rosewood back and sides pair well with the Grand Jumbo body, making it loud, rich in low-end, and perfectly clear, regardless of the neck you are playing. The balance between two necks takes a bit of getting used to, but if you’re looking for some inspiration, Molly Tuttle can be seen expertly switching necks on this very model on the road.
Whether you want one neck open-tuned for frailing like Molly, or you want to do your best Don Felder impression and play “Hotel California,” this guitar can literally cover it all. We’ll even loan you two capos so you can play it in the right key when you come and try it out. (Hey, you can even play Stairway to Heaven if you want.) Best of all, this guitar comes with a Fishman pickup system that allows for neck switching while plugged in. This is a finely crafted, stage and studio ready, instrument with tons of mojo and an impressively balanced sound. It comes with a proprietary molded hardshell case.
