Details
This Hank Mauel 12-fret 000 Trinity model was made with highly figured walnut back and sides, an old redwood top (salvaged by Carter's Redwood), and has a 2-piece mahogany neck with walnut center stripe. The doves inlays in the Macassar ebony headstock, fingerboard and bridge were done by Harvey Leach. Binding on the body is rosewood, with ebony binding on the fingerboard. Neck is 1 3/4" wide at the nut, string scale is 25 3/8". It has a K & K pickup and comes with a Calton flight case, which was made for this body shape and it's a perfect fit.
This guitar originally had a flamed redwood top, which apparently failed or was damaged and then replaced in 2005 by Hank Mauel himself. It's been played quite a lot, so there are some small nicks and dings in the top finish and pick scuffs to the clear pickguard (it's had a partial refret to correct playing wear to the frets). A top crack in the upper bout, along the edge of the fingerboard, has been glued and cleated. A short stretch of the back binding must have come loose at the waist as there are signs of it being glued. There's a slight gap along the back edge of the bridge (the curved portion only, not the tips) but the bridge seems solidly glued overall so it's a visual issue. There was a crack repaired along the fingerboard extension on the treble side, and Gryphon did a partial refret up to the 7th fret.
This is an easy guitar to play with the smooth rich tone and sustain of a redwood soundboard, even for those who play with a very light touch.
